Photos!

It has been a while since the last update, so I felt like I had to come up with something. The weather has been terrible this whole week, and the weather forecast doesn’t look too promising. Though it seems like the raining will be ‘on hold’ for this Sunday, which of course will be spend on the bike.

I have decided to put up a few pictures taken from the passenger seat of a car, on the danish highways, and some other pictures as well.

Check ‘em out:

Warm weather

I just got home from todays trip, with my friend Michael.

Later in the evening, we met two other guys at Langelinie, who were riding a Ducati SuperSport 600 and a Suzuki GSX-R 750. Very nice bikes indeed!

Actually, I have met them the year before, same place. When we were all three riding Honda CB400F’s, but we never had a chance to hook up again.

It is very nice talking motorcycles with other people, in your own age. This is a rare thing, as there are not many motorcyclists in the age 19-20. Caused by a redicilous law preventing us from riding so called large motorcycles with more than 34 horsepowers, before turning 21.
And perhaps a lack of interrest of the people in that age-range.

Anyways, it was a great trip, as always I took some pictures, check them out:

I sold my soul to the devil

Today, I sold my Honda CB 400 Four.

I sold the original exhaust to my friend Michael, because I know he will take the best care of it than any other ‘consumer’ who would buy the bike. In exchange I got his exhaust which I fitted on the bike before I sold it.

So, at the moment, I am bikeless :(
Next week I’m going to look at some other bikes, which will be preferebly a Honda CB750F or CB900F.

The weblog will be renewed with information about my new bike, which of course also will be a real “rice cooking device” of a motorcycle.

I will update with new pictures of Michaels Honda CB 400 Four soon, when it is back together.

Remember, I am always open for comments or questions, so please feel free to use the comment function of this weblog.

First ride

At last, the bike has been assembled and can legaly be ridden on the road.
First I had some electrical trouble with the battery charging system, so the battery ran empty after a few minutes. After rechecking the wiring and replacing the alternator it finally started charging the battery while the engine was running - I’m not sure if it is charging enough yet, but I will check up on it later.
The important thing is that it works and it has been running for a whole day without problems so far.

Hooohah! pretty much ready to be taken out for a ride.

The carburettors needs some readjusting and synchronizing, perhaps I need to adjust the valve gap again to be sure.

New wheels, indicators and a paintjob with new stickers will be a very nice addition.

Old pictures

I was just browsing through some of my old pictures from the summer 2004, and i stumbled over this one.

It was taken shortly after I got my second Honda CB 400 Four Super Sport 1975. This is actually the same bike that you see with the black side covers and gasoline tank in the bikes section, I just changed the tank and plastic side covers.

There she is, damn I miss riding her.

The picture was taken at a place called Lange linie, it’s at the docs in the Copenhagen harbor, I think it’s right next to a small lighthouse. This is where bikers usually meet to get ice or a hot dog and talk about the good old days or just showing off their bike.

Start your engines

I had a little trouble making the ignition work, but after changing a few wires from the breaker points and condensers to the ignition coils, it popped up right away.

After tightening the exhaust-to-cylinder head clamps, tightening the engine clamps and adjusting the cam chain the engine finally sounded almost right, I just need to fit on the air filter before I can perfectly judge the engine sound.

I also need to get the carburettors cleaned up and polished before fully tightening it all up.

Just another side view of the engine, almost looks like a complete bike from that angle.

I will do my best to update the weblog again tomorrow, if I have any other “breaking news”.

Electrical trouble

Finally the newly painted rocker cover came on, perhaps I will buy some new valve tappet caps to go with it, as the old ones where pretty busted and corroded.

Since I started changing the bullet connectors on my wiring harness, I’ve had a lot of trouble making the electrical things as lights and ignition work.

I will be going through the whole wiring harness tomorrow and check each and every connection so that I can get the electrical problems out of the way.

Hopefully I will be able to start the engine soon, right now the only things missing are as follows:

  • Tightening screws on the right side engine casing.
  • Double checking clutch.
  • Adjusting points.
  • Adjusting valves.
  • Mounting breather cover.
  • Mounting carburettors.
  • Putting on valve tappet caps.
  • Filling engine/transmission with new oil.

Hopefully I can make it all by tomorrow afternoon.

I really appreciate constructive criticism, especially on this website. Feel free to comment my posts and contact me if you have any ideas for this website/weblog.

Engine casing

I just finished polishing the last peice of the engine casing. The right side engine cover that covers the clutch.

The rocker cover has also been painted and a fresh polished breather cover, these two mentioned items goes above the cylinder head, and covers the cam shaft, which is now freely open.

I’m going to order a few new spares from David Silver Spares again, this time I need 4 new indicators, as the old ones was strangely painted mat black over the chrome paint.

There are a few parts that needs to be beadblasted, some of the metal plates that holds the engine in its place, and the numberplate holder as well. I am thinking of getting the rear fender rechromed. That depends on the price, perhaps it can be done free, just like the frame was bead blasted and powder coated for free.

The Vintage Wiring kit came last friday, and by now I’ve changed almost all the bullet connectors on the wiring harness. The old ones were pretty hard and rotten. The new electrical wiring connectors are giving me some problems though, after renewing all the bullet connectors, i can turn the key and the neutral and oil indicator starts lighting, but nothing else works. I think I need to go through the wiring harness again and check all wires for contact.
I also ned a new indicator relay, both of my old ones acts pretty strange, and has always done that since I got them.

In the above picture you can see how far I am with the bike itself in the restore process, if you close your eyes half-way it almost looks like a complete motorcycle.

Just showing off, nice perspective though.

Wheels. What can I say, I need new ones! ha ha.
Well, I’m going to get the old wheel drum restored by getting it brushed and repolished, after that I’m going to give it some wax and get it laced up with my new rim and spokes.

The wheel drum finish doesn’t look too good.

Another update, with no real progress

I have just mounted the seat and gas tank again, just to see how it looks in the whole.

I am considering getting the repaint in gloss black paint again, because it looks so darn sweet with black/chrome/polished metal together :)
I have another set of tanks and plastik side covers, so maybe I’ll get the other painted in some sort of red, so that I can chose between them whenever I like.

The above picture is taken from the almost same angle as the before pictures i took in spring ‘04. For comparision.

Yesterday I ordered a set of bullet connectors for my wiring loom at Vintage Connections.
I’m really looking forward to receiving it!

Now before I can get on with the restoration project I need to get some of the engine mounting metal plates bead blasted and powder coated as well. I also need to get some of the engine casing and wheel drums polished before I can get them respoked with my new spokes and rims I bought.

Please feel free to comment my posts, I would really appreciate some comments/ideas about the upcoming paint job as well.

Exhaust mounted

Yesterday I just received a new ’shitload’ of Genuine Honda spares from David Silver Spares. Including new rims and spokes for the front and rear wheel. I also got a brand new ignition points system, which you can see in the picture below.

points1.jpg

Brand new, genuine ignition points, condensers and back plate assembly.

I woke up early this saturday morning, at 8 AM.
I have just finished mounting my new genuine Honda 4-in-1 exhaust system for my 400/4. Unfortuneatly the exhaust split collars that were also genuine Honda parts didn’t fit exactly, they were about 1/2 inch too long, so I had to reuse the old rusty ones, until I cut the new ones.

exhaust1.jpg

Here is a close-up look at the exhaust system mounted to the cylinder head with brand new cylinder head clamps.

I had some trouble making the exhaust fit perfectly, but after a few minutes and some cursing I made it fit. I also noticed that I need a new protective rubber peice for the exhaust silencer part that stops the centerstand. I think I will have to look that one up on the SOHC4 network forums.

Here is a picture from the left side of the motorcycle, with a brand new Honda generator cover badge and newly polished enginecase, maybe it needs a bit more polish work before it’s done.

In the above picture you can see how the complete exhaust system flows nicely down alongside with the frame and engine.
